I'm Andrea Dolan, a dedicated healthcare professional with a deep-rooted passion for nursing and a profound commitment to improving the lives of others. My journey into nursing began with a deeply personal experience that shaped my career path and fueled my desire to make a difference in the lives of those facing health challenges.
During my senior year of high school, I experienced the profound loss of my father to cancer. This pivotal moment ignited a calling within me to pursue a career in healthcare, with a focus on providing compassionate care to individuals and families affected by cancer.
After graduating, I embarked on my nursing career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where I had the privilege of working in pediatric oncology followed by surgical oncology. My time at MSKCC solidified my passion for oncology nursing and inspired me to further my education in public health and education.
I pursued a master’s in public health at New York University, concentrating in community health education to deepen my understanding of public health principles and community-based interventions. I continued to work as an educator on a Surgical Oncology Unit at MSKCC, where I honed my skills in patient care, patient education, and support for patients and their loved ones. I volunteered at the Bereavement Center of Westchester, facilitating support groups for children who lost loved ones to 9/11, serving on their board of directors which furthered my commitment to holistic healing and compassionate care in my community.
My life took an unexpected turn when my mother was diagnosed with terminal gallbladder cancer. I made the difficult decision to take time away from my career to care for my three young children and support my mother through her illness.
It was after this period of caregiving that I found a new calling in palliative medicine. I pursued a post-graduate certificate as a family nurse practitioner and began my career in palliative care, focusing on supporting young adults with terminal gastrointestinal cancer.
Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of caring for patients and families facing terminal illness at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, providing holistic care to address their physical, psychological, spiritual, and existential needs. My personal experiences, combined with my professional journey, led me to expand my scope of practice and pursue a second board certification in psychiatry.
As a divorced mother of three children and advocating for my child with ADHD and dyslexia, I understand the complexities of balancing personal and professional responsibilities. My experiences have deepened my compassion and strengthened my resolve to advocate for patients of all ages facing adversity.
Drawing upon a decade providing palliative care, I've come to understand the intricate psychological dimensions of patient care and the profound impact it has on both individuals and families. Motivated by this insight, I made the pivotal decision to delve deeper into psychiatry, obtaining a second board certification as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. This journey has been driven by my unwavering commitment to address the multifaceted needs of those facing chronic medical and psychological conditions, ensuring holistic care and support for each individual. My dedication to serving the community drives every aspect of my practice, as I strive to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages experiencing any mental health challenges.
I am driven by a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment in my work, knowing that I am making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve. My journey has been shaped by love, loss, and resilience, and I am committed to continuing to grow and advocate for patients of all ages.
